Module Synopsis

This module is a natural extension to Typography and Advanced Typography and it introduces students to the concepts and practices of digital publishing. The knowledge gained will allow students to acquit themselves with better effectiveness in areas dealing with publishing: organisation and presentation of information, visual and textual relationships and suggest suitable methods or formats for publishing appropriate to the content.

The learning and teaching approach for the module will be studio-based, with students engaging with practical tasks during the studio sessions, and presenting their ideas and thoughts within the group and to the facilitators. There is regular review, feedback and or critique sessions leading to the final project review to assess progress and alignment to the learning outcomes in relation to the brief.

The module is supported by a combination of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and online resources. Assessment is evaluated through coursework. Assessment approach involves Continuous assessment through Exercises and Projects that are prescribed throughout the semester. The final assessment in the form of a Final Project and Portfolio submission/Exhibition, takes place at the end of the semester.

Reflection

The module of publishing design are quite an new experience for me as it lean to practical application of designing and publishing book where it is definitely related with the other module subject that is typography that I taken in previous semester, so I was able to effectively make use of the tools that I learn in typography in designing the layout of my book.

I have found myself spending more time on the subject content that I want to write about as it took time for me to decide along with that was layout design of the book where I shifted and move illustration, pictures and words text content around more often than not as to find the best layout. The illustration and picture that I have design as well as taken picture from mostly my surrounding along with personal hand drawn design illustration.

Throughout this entire this module, from what I have observe that is it the lecture room itself are a lab where we encourage to experiment with the layout of our book to give our own design style to it along with applying practical application to it from deciding the exact sizes of our book to the color and paper sheet that we wanted our book to be print with.

Overall the book that we design and printed out can be said to represented our personality and skills that we have learn throughout the other modules where we apply them through the tools that we have taught with. I can say that very much have eye opening experience of how book is made and publish where I can't even imagined the process for printing thousand of books even work where Publishing Design gave me small glimpse of this process work.
