Module Synopsis

Environment Design brings extraordinary story world concepts to life for the video games, animation and film industry that would not be possible to visualize before the production begins. This module will provide students with perspective techniques to produce accurate, believable objects and environments using a number of traditional and digital tools in creating effective and naturalistic settings and forms while exploring environment design principles such as structure, spatial perspective, accuracy and realism. The module will introduce students to the study of environments and its influence on storytelling, with a strong focus on the relationship between form and function. Students will learn to combine traditional drawing and painting techniques to produce world creation concept design with high level details informed by fundamentals in architecture, plants, animals, nature and geology studies in order to envision non-existing story worlds that are convincing and believable to the audience. A project-based learning method will be adopted with a balance of foundational education and software-based technical training that emphasizes on extensive and in-depth skill development relevant to the demands of the industry. The assessment approach involves Continuous Assessment which includes Exercises and Projects that are prescribed throughout the semester while the Final Assessment is a Final Project and Portfolio submission which takes place at the end of the semester.
